Natural Park  "prat"  Cabanes - Torreblanca

The prat de cabanes torreblanca is a narrow strip of land with marshes formed by quaternary deposits. This natural space is located on the coastal plain stretching from the municipal boundaries of torreblanca and cabanes, limited by the sierra de irta and sierra de les santes. Ranges.

The characteristic prat landscape is typical  of coastal wetland, separated from the sea by a line of gravel and pebbles with some zones of sandy beaches.

  • Viewing Points

In torreblanca there are some viewing points from where the lagoons can be observed: it’s a former lagoon closed in by a coastal strip of gravel and pebbles, silted up by alluvial sediments. The existence behind of the coastal cord, of a quaternary deposits of a peat-bogs proceeding form deltoid ans coastal sediments, with a maximun power of 4.5 mts.

  • Water

The nature reserve “el prat” as any humid zone, it’s characterized by the presence of a water sheet, permanent in some places and seasona in others. This factor it’s essential for a long-term conservation.
The periodic flood of certain zones is caused by characteristics of the marsh. It’s because is a depressed zone, and the groundwather level can come to the surface.

  • Fauna

The fauna in the nature reserve is of great impotance, as endemic species such as the crustacean know as the gambeta (paleomonetes zariguey), the fish called the fartet (aphanius ibera) or the samaruc (valencia hispanica) that has been considered by the international union for conservation of nature ans natural resources (iucn) like one of the 24 vertebrate species in most danger of extinctionof europe, are to be found here. The birds are the group of fauna best represented in the prat, with special mention being deserved by the biggest colony in the valecian community of a rare and endangered species, the collared pratincole. Also a great interest are the montagu’s harrier, the mousrached warbler, with one of the greatest iberian populations in the nature reserve, the black-winged stilt, the little bittern, little tern, snowy plover, the marbled duck or the coot.
Amongst the wintering birds we could mention the regular presence of the great cormorant, the marsh harrier, common buzzard, common kingfisher or the penduline tit. This is completed with the birds that visit the prat during their migratory trips suchas the garganey, the osprey, black-bellied plover or the northern wheather, amongst others.

  • Vegetation

In the reserve there are mainly three groups of plant communities: the salt marshes, the ones proper to coastal strip and the aquatic and swamp communities.
Lastly we sould mention the presence in the prat of species of flora with a very localised distribution in the vlaencian community, such a mediterranean juniper (juniperusoxycedrus subs. Macrocarpa), the yellow-flowered aristolochia (aristolochia clematitis), the limonium angustebracteatun or even exclusively valencian endemisms as the thalictrum maritimum.

"La Passió"

There is a long-standing tradition of the theatrical reproduction of the Passion of Christ in Torreblanca that dates from the turn of the century. In 1978 the youth theatre group “Torreblanquins” launched the first long-awaited production of the Passion like other Mediterrean villages do.
The opening performance was on 12th April 1979. There is just one open-air performance on Maundy Thursday at 10 o’clock at night. The dialogue is in Valencian, and takes place on various stages set up in the village. The Passion in Torreblanca consists of 16 acts and lasts about 2 hours. Most of the Passion takes place in the main square with the exception of the scenes of the Viacrusis and Calvary Hill.
The fact that the passion is in the open air gives a very realistic tone to the scenes and the spectator feels part of the Passion, and on some occasions totally involved in the drama, mingling with the actors and actually feeling the agony the inhabitants of Jerusalem felt on that fatal day on 7th April 1030, during the last hours of the accused man from Nazareth called Christ.
The Passion begins with the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. He is praised by a group of children and disciples waving olive branches and palm leaves. Everyone is shouting “Hosanna”. Then in the square Jesus tells of his works and is accompanied by children and disciples. Then we see the scene of the adultery, the night meeting of Nicodemo and later the Veronica. Followed by the anointment in Betania and the first meeting of Sanedrín. Then the last supper, the first civil hearing before Pilate and Herod and then Pilate again, which results in the whipping and the death sentence. All of these acts are in the main village square.
The following acts take place in the streets of the village which lead to Calvary hill. There we witness the pitiful and bitter march of Jesus to the Golgotha. Along the way he meets his mother, the Virgin Mary. Jesus also has several falls which surprises the public by their crude realism. The brave Veronica, who wipes Jesus’ brow. Another fall when Jesus is crushed by the weight of the cross he’s carrying. We hear him talking to the women near him who are crying.  Jesus is helped with the cross after his third fall as the soldiers fear that he will not survive the journey to his place of execution.
Judas has committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at the entrance to Calvary hill. This scene shocks people who have not noticed the body and brush past the hanging feet.
The final acts take place in a magnificent area of the Calvary hill. The Crucifixion, the agony and death of Redentor, the representation of Piety, the burial and the descent of the two thieves. Finally the drama concludes with the Resurrection.
With gratitude to the some one hundred actors who participate in the Passion. There are also numerous anonymous collaborators, local confraternities, cultural associations, local businesses and shops which also help. Special thanks to Torreblanca Council which sets up the stages and gives financial help. For this reason the Passion belongs to the whole village.
